According to a February 11 report on the Defense World website, the Russian Helicopters group announced that testing has begun on the prototype of the Ka-52M, the latest upgraded version of the Ka-52 attack helicopter.

In a statement released on February 10, the Russian Helicopters group said that deliveries of the Ka-52M helicopter to the Russian armed forces would begin in 2022. "Flight tests of the Ka-52M helicopter are currently underway at the Kamov National Helicopter Center, and are expected to be completed in 2022. Considering the production cycle, we are ready to begin assembling the Ka-52M helicopters to ensure timely delivery," said the Director General of Russian Helicopters. He also stated that last year, the group manufactured two upgraded Ka-52M helicopters based on the mass-produced Ka-52 helicopters, featuring improved performance and firepower.
The report claims that the upgraded Ka-52 helicopter is considered a strong competitor to the US-made Apache helicopter. The Ka-52M helicopter made its first flight in August 2020. Besides being equipped with longer-range missiles, its most significant improvement is the adoption of a new AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar. The aircraft is also equipped with an upgraded optoelectronic system, enhancing target detection and identification capabilities. Furthermore, the fire control system has been upgraded to improve the accuracy of firepower strikes.
The Ka-52M helicopter's main rotor blades are also equipped with more powerful heating elements, allowing the helicopter to fly in various temperature environments, including the Arctic. Additionally, the improved Ka-52 is equipped with stronger, more wear-resistant wheels, and added equipment for defense against improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The cockpit of the Ka-52M helicopter has also been improved to better meet modern ergonomic requirements.
Andrei Boginsky, Director of the Russian Helicopter Holding, said last year: "The missile equipment of the Ka-52M helicopter is unified with that of the Mi-28NM, which will significantly increase the strike range."
