Indian media: Pakistan's JF-17 fighter jets are equipped with the same missiles as the J-20, significantly increasing their air combat capabilities

On April 30, the Indian media outlet, Eurasian Times, reported that Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder (also known as the FC-1 Xiaolong in China) fighter jet has been equipped with the "most advanced" missile, the same type used by the J-20.

According to a report by the Eurasian Times, an Indian media outlet, on April 30, Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder (referred to as the "Fierce Dragon" by China) fighter jet has been equipped with the same "most advanced" missile as the J-20.

The report states that the latest version of Pakistan's JF-17 fighter jet is now capable of carrying the PL-10E (霹雳-10E) air-to-air combat missile, considered the most advanced air-to-air missile in China's arsenal. Until now, only China's J-20 fighter jet has been equipped with this missile. A photo that surfaced online on April 27 shows a JF-17 Block 3 prototype, number 3001, with two PL-10E missiles mounted on its wingtips.

The Eurasian Times believes that equipping the JF-17 Thunder with the PL-10E missile is part of a modernization upgrade plan for the fighter jet. This fighter jet will be used to replace Pakistan Air Force's aging A-5C attack aircraft, F-7P/PG fighters, Mirage IIIs, and Mirage Vs. The latest version of the JF-17 fighter jet is the Block 3 type, which has many upgrades compared to previous models, including the use of AESE radar (active electronically scanned array radar) and new air-to-air missiles. This will give the Pakistan Air Force a reliable fighter jet to supplement its US-made F-16 fleet.

The report also mentions that the PL-10E is one of the most advanced air-to-air missiles currently available, specifically developed for China's fourth-generation J-20 fighter jet. It has a 90-degree off-boresight launch capability (HOBS). When used with a helmet-mounted sight, this missile allows pilots to lock on and launch without turning the aircraft toward the target, significantly simplifying the process for weapons operators targeting aerial objectives. Additionally, the infrared imaging guidance (IIR) seeker is a key feature of this missile, offering strong resistance to infrared countermeasures and accurately focusing on the aircraft's signal characteristics as per the developers' requirements. With this missile, the combat capabilities of the JF-17 Block 3 fighter jet will be significantly enhanced, giving it an advantage over its competitors—especially the fighter jets of the Indian Air Force.

The report concludes by noting that on the same day the image of the JF-10 fighter jet carrying PL-10E missiles was revealed, the Indian Air Force successfully conducted an air test of the Astra-5 air-to-air missile on its domestically produced LCA Tejas fighter jet.
