Recently, the X-band dual-polarization active phased array radar system, independently developed by Guangdong Naruida Radar Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as: Naruida Radar), was successfully debugged and installed at the Sha Lo Wan airflow analyzer station of the Hong Kong Observatory and officially put into operation.

Dual-polarization phased array radar is a next-generation weather radar technology with ultra-fine cloud and rain detection capabilities. It has obvious advantages in detecting mesoscale weather systems such as tornadoes, hail, and short-duration heavy rainfall. This new type of radar adopts a combination of dual-polarization and phased array technologies, with ultra-high spatiotemporal resolution detection capabilities. It can achieve a detection range of 60km within 60 seconds, with vertical elevation angle scanning up to 60° and no less than 68 layers. Compared with traditional equipment, its vertical spatial coverage is increased by 3 times, time resolution is increased by 6 times, and spatial resolution is increased by 64 times. It can achieve more accurate weather system identification and classification, high-precision wind field inversion, and longer lead times for severe weather warnings.
Currently, Naruida Radar has completed the deployment and operation of X-band dual-polarization phased array radars in core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, including Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen. After the successful operation of the dual-polarization active phased array radar system at the Sha Lo Wan airflow analyzer station of the Hong Kong Observatory, it will, together with the phased array radars deployed in Guangdong Province, form the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area ultra-fine weather radar collaborative observation network." This network will provide effective monitoring data for the research of atmospheric structural changes and mesoscale weather forecasting and warning in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, supporting the monitoring, forecasting, and warning of severe convective weather such as thunderstorms, strong winds, short-duration heavy rainfall, tornadoes, downbursts, and hail in surrounding areas.
This new weather radar will provide a series of refined meteorological service solutions based on dual-polarization phased array radar, including severe weather monitoring, severe weather warning, and short-term weather forecasting. This will help further improve the accuracy and refinement of meteorological services in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, adding new impetus to the construction of smart meteorology and the high-quality development of the meteorological industry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
